Roof Top Tents for Trucks
A pickup changes the roof tent calculation in one useful way: the tent can ride over the cab or over the bed, and the bed itself can take a canopy and become part of the camp. From this catalogue, truck buyers split two ways. Weight-first buyers take an inflatable tent — the 18 kg Skiff or the 8.4 kg Solo — mounted over the cab, leaving the bed free for cargo, water and a fridge. Permanence-first buyers mount a hard shell and accept its weight for a one-motion pitch. Either way, the truck-specific addition is the aluminium pickup canopy: a locking, full-height canopy turns the bed into secure storage under the tent.
Mounting position is the real decision
Over the cab, the tent's weight sits on the cab roof's dynamic rating, which on many pickups is the tightest number in the whole build — another argument for the inflatable line's weights. Over the bed, on a rack above a canopy, the load path is stronger but the tent rides higher. Pitch access differs too: bed-mounted tents are reached from the tailgate side, cab-mounted from the doors. Decide the position first, then the tent; the roof load guide gives the checking method for both.
Pairs well with
The truck tents page covers bed-based camping more broadly, the truck bed canopy page details the canopy line, and a 270° car side awning off the rack completes the classic pickup camp: bed below, tent above, shade beside.
